  • What is a pastel painting?

My full color portraits are done in pastel. Although pastel makes you think of soft, delicate shades of color, the name “pastel” actually comes from the word “paste”. This “paste” is pure pigment and binder formed into sticks that resemble chalk. They’re applied by hand on various paper surfaces and in some cases, can be used wet with a brush. There are “hard” pastels, “soft” pastels and even pastel pencils. I use all of these.

The powdery pigments that make up a pastel painting can easily be smudged with a finger tip, so utmost care should be taken when handling. Graphite needs the same care as well. I lightly spray fixative on my paintings to help protect against smudges and finger prints, but all caution should be taken because it
does not “seal” the work, but mearly helps keep
    things in place.
There is a border around the art that is used for handling. Once framed behind glass, you can rest easy and enjoy your painting for generations!

  • How is it packaged and how do I frame it?
  • Why aren’t the black & white portraits much cheaper since color isn’t involved?
